The Compassion of Strangers: How a Gentleman I Only Just Encountered Helped Me Obtain the Job That Transformed My Existence

In the late 1980s, I was beginning a budget travel adventure to Europe with a friend. Since my travel mate was exploring starting a postgraduate program in New York, we had planned a 14-day stopover there on the way to London.

We reached the student accommodation, a big multi-story edifice on the UWS called International House. After dropping our bags, we went directly to the cafeteria, where we picked up meals, sat down, and engaged in conversation with other diners.

Adjacent to my seat was an Iraqi man studying engineering at an Ivy League institution. He inquired what I my profession was, and I explained that I had newly finished with a science degree and had been conducting research involving microscopic analysis.

He pointed out that there was an research lab at the university – close to the school of engineering, which was the reason he was familiar with it. He recommended that I consider applying for a job with them. I dismissed the idea, saying that I was soon departing to Europe and, even more importantly, I didn’t have a US visa.

The next day I toured the city, going back to the cafeteria that after dark. The engineering student approached me and informed me that he had arranged an interview for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Since he had made the arrangement, I went to the meeting – but immediately informed my interviewer that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was probably wasting her time.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a metropolis where everything seems achievable – she declared: “We can make that happen. What's your start date?” I missed my plane to London.

I worked there for a trio of years. One of the benefits was that I also received complimentary education at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to complete a postgrad program in international relations.

I lost touch with him and I can't recall his full name, but his incredible act of kindness changed my life in so many ways. I would never have had the bravery or self-assurance to contact anyone at an elite institution and seek a position. And, I had consistently hoped to study abroad, but lacked the financial means without that tuition waiver.

Critically, that job in New York resulted in a position in Switzerland where I encountered my wonderful partner, with whom I am raising four amazing children. It was a total sliding doors moment. That helpful person changed my trajectory in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
